Interest in working in International development

I am interested in pursuing a career in the international development field and am looking for suggestions and pointers to get started on this career path.  And I apologize for the long posting.

My story is I have a master in public health degree with a focus on epidemiology.

My work over the past 15 years has involved working with health delivery programs in the monitoring and evaluation role and conducting data analysis of monitoring, evaluation and research data.  I had worked with two state-run cancer screening programs as their monitoring and evaluation manager and cancer epidemiologist, as well as a “oh we need this done” person (in a state health department you sometimes wear several hats).  I am currently working with a non-governmental organization that conducts health service research/evaluation around family planning and HIV services mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, South and South East Asia.

Prior to getting my MPH I had worked in Thailand with the US Peace Corps for 2 years in lymphatic filariasis disease control.

My interest is to work with intervention design and monitoring and evaluation within the development field.  I have enjoyed my work with health programs and would like to expand this experience into other programs including health, livelihood, water/sanitation, food security, etc.

I enjoy being involved in the development of interventions with programs and building the programs capacity to develop and carry out evaluations of their efforts, both processes and impacts.

I would like to hear suggestions about options and opportunities to start building my career towards this interest.  Such as:

Is there a need for someone in the role of intervention design?  (working with programs in the design)

Is there a need for someone in the role of conducting and building program capacity to design and conduct evaluations?

I would also like to gain more experience in working with developmental organizations to make myself more marketable.  Aside from an actual job with an organization, I would be interested in volunteering with organizations to assist in the development of interventions and designing/planning and conducting evaluations.  Unfortunately the opportunities would have to be limited to either organizations close to home/current job (Triangle Park area of North Carolina) or on-line/virtual volunteering.

Does anyone out there know of opportunities or places to look for listings?   (aside from the various organizations websites?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts/suggestions/pointers.

Conrad
