Looking for resources about livelihood development as climate change adaptation

Hello! My name is Hellen Bayliff and I am taking the OL Adaptation Course 341 as well, and am looking for any links to websites or scientific papers, and any ideas about intervention activities or resources that I could use in my project. So far in my search I have found quite a bit about adaptation approaches in general and tool kits, how-to manuals, but not really very much about actual examples of livelihood generation projects with a CDA and climate change adaptation approach.  I am working…See More

Let us know about you in a short paragraph
I have a degree in Cultural Anthropology. I married a 4th generation Chilcotin rancher in 1998 and have 2 kids, 9 & 12. We live in the remote central interior of BC called the Chilcotin Plateau which is high and dry. We feel we are definitely experiencing the effects of climate change: unpredictable and unseasonable weather with extreme drought since 2001 which has caused grass production to drop some 30%; pine beetle has devastated our forests and collapsed logging in the area; 3 years of large, out of control wildfires, 2 of the fires in the last 2 years, and we're expecting more; predators out of balance with prey so that wildlife and cattle are being decimated. Ranchers and other community members including native people are all experiencing financial hardship (in an area which has always been pretty marginal anyway). As producers of food and sustainers of the environment, we are not valued in mainstream society and so are not adequately paid. I would like to work with our community to find ways to reduce our vulnerability and increase our resilience and self-sufficiency.

Hello Hellen!

Thank you for joining our new development community – and welcome.

CSDi course participants had quite bit to say about what this network was about.

I’m looking forward to seeing you join some groups and enter some discussions.

Any chance you could post a photo of you?

I also look forward to collaborating with a new friend from Canada.

And -  I'll look forward to working with you in class.

I'm very familiar with BC. I lived in Seattle for 30 years and hiked, backpacked, skiied, kayaked and sailed all through BC.  Love it!

Thanks again!

Tim Magee
