Agro-ecological systems approaches to conservation

I am looking at this approach to conservation. What value does it add to the current conservation agenda. Does any body see synergies with the strictly protected area models?Continue

Cocaine to Blame for Rain Forest Loss, Study Says. Coca planting linked to deforestation in biodiversity hot spot (Case in Colombia) http://ning.it/gTfVt8

I could share my experience of implementing agroforestry systems as alternative to replace coca plantation which has a high impact on the environment due the use of chemical inputs during growing and processing. These agroforestry systems as cacao crop reincorporate flora and fauna as a restoring strategy due the amount of species that could be part of. On pictures you will see the damage of a coca crop and the replacement for cacao plantation.field after eradication of coca cultivation.jpglearning nursery seedling production .JPGAgroforestry cacao-banana-corn system.JPGDSC05189.JPGhappy family first cacao production.JPG

Hi Urmila, Wellcome to the group!! Actually, I have access to some information that is related to what you are asking for... and in fact today I just received some information that might work for your project on TheWaterChannel four very informative videos on soil erosion.

·         Soil Erosion and Soil Conservation in Rain-fed Areas of West Punjab

·         Simple Methods of Check Dam Construction

·         Journey of the Soil

·         Simple Techniques of Terrace Layout

Hope good luck at your project!!!!

I am taking OL 341 course online and my partner Pratima and me are working on Soil and water conservation issue in one of the district of Nepal. For our project we have proposed a simple solution like Bio-dyke preparation for controlling river bank cutting and soil loss. I would appreciate if anybody could suggest me some more simple and cheap solutions to control soil loss, increased water availability to agricultural field etc, solutions that are easy to implement and locally available are preferred.

I am part of an online adaptation course OL 341 (http://www.csd-i.org/ol-341-adapting-climate-change/) where my team is developing a project to benefit a rural community located in The Andes of Colombia mainly coffee growers. The lack road infrastructure for developing and the effects of climate change on weather pattern have affected the generations of incomes to cover family expenses and basic needs. We want to establish a Alternate Income generation and Local Agriculture Adaptation Program  by organizing the community in a based farmer association at the same time working on marketing assessment as well as implement of productive project under sustainable agriculture standard and principles and improvement of maintenance coffee cultivation and establishment of small cultivation system for food security and small local market to meet the nutritional needs of the community and get an income remaining.

I'm posting to this group today to see if any of you have found any resources that could help me in the development of my project—including links to websites or scientific papers that would help me find intervention activities that I could use in my project, or links to sites where I can download how-to field guides or manuals on implementing these activities with the community.

Sincerely, Celia Dávila

I believe there is scope for both, formal protected areas and degraded habitat outside the protected areas, there is need to increase awareness through educating operators on how to go about it.

To some environmentalists the pure conservation approach that promotes the establishment of formal protected areas is seen as a potential obstacle to protecting the full spectrum of biodiversity. This approach tends to downplay the importance of degraded habitat outside of protected areas that could be restored with some basic interventions. Do we have to choose one or the other or is there scope for both?

What we see around us (1) have not appeared from haphazard activities (2) things around us function in an orderly manner indicating that there must be a source of what we see and a controller of orderly processes. The management, protection and rational utilization of resources by humans for the production of useful materials in the achievement of highest sustainable quality for mankind while eliminating evil pollution is a welcome idea in promoting restoration and conservation.
