Vulnerability ~ A Tool Kit for Assessing and Preparing

This toolkit and case study examples may be of use for communities and their partners who wish to assess vulnerability and make preparations.

Their website notes:

  • One person in 19 living in the world’s poorest countries is at risk from climate change, compared to one in 1,500 in wealthiest.
  • If sea levels rise by one metre, 17.5% of Bangladesh will disappear under sea, potentially affecting 70 million people.
  • In 2007, 12 of the 13 UN emergency appeals were related to severe storms, floods and droughts.
  • Yields from agriculture fed by rainfall could drop by 50% in some African countries by 2020.

Clearly a little preparation could go a long way!

Participatory Vulnerability Analysis (PVA) is a tool developed by ActionAid which involves communities, local authorities and other stakeholders in an in-depth examination of what makes them vulnerable.

Hope this might be useful.  What other tools are available for involving communities in risk and mitigation assessments?
